It's usually wisest to make checks out to the editor and not the name of the zine. I've tried to indicate if the zine does reviews of self-produced work or only items that are available through the corporate channels. I've only reviewed zines that I've actually seen. If you know of ones that fit (electronic/industrial/techno/yougettheidea), tell the editor to send a copy along and I'll send a copy of Technology Works in trade. ================================================================================ size: S-Standard (8 1/2" x 11") HS - Half standard (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") L-Legal (8 1/2" x 14") HL - Half legal (7" x 8 1/2") M-Mini (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") O - Oversized (big) The number after the size is number of page/sides in most recent issue. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- list compiled by paul moore - pdm@ucrmath.ucr.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Androgyny Meets editor: Shinji Suzuki 8-1014, 8-1-35, Kokuryo-cho, last issue rec'd: Vol.001 Chofu-shi, Tokyo 182, cover price: $4 JAPAN size: S-58 >> A thick, full-sized 'zine with articles in Japanese, French, German, and English with lots of grainy photos and strange images. The main pieces are on Entre Vifs and the International Hafler Trio Support Organization and Hunting Lodge, as well as some record reviews and a lot of material I can't figure out. boing-boing editor: Mark Frauenfelder 11288 Ventura Blvd, #818 last issue rec'd: 9, Oct 92 Studio City, CA 91604 cover price: $3.95 size: S-66 >> Infinitely more interesting and useful than Mondo but lacking the distri- bution channels. Interviews, fiction, reviews, a groqing zine column, and lots more to offer. A good interview with Machines of Loving Grace in the latest issue. Control editor: Brent Sawatzky 703 Penbrooke Rd. SE last issue rec'd: version 1.0, Nov 92 Calgary, Alberta T2A 3T3 cover price: $2 CANADA size: HS-36 >> Quite an impressive outing for their first issue. Interviews with Alien Sex Fiend, Xorcist, Poohbucket, Cop Shoot Cop, and author S.N. Lewitt. The interviews show the 'zine's computer background through the many questions about bands' hardware. Surprisingly, Alien Sex Fiend concede that they might be "industrial" whilst Cop Shoot Cop don't think they are. There's also a piece of short science fiction, reviews, artwork, and a pro-drug essay. Crewzine editor: Richard Guertler PO Box 26 last issue rec'd: #2, Nov 92 820 14 Bratislava 214 cover price: free (send IRC's) CZECHO-SLOVAKIA size: HS-36 >> The latest issue was primarily in English with a few pieces written in German. The articles tend towards being about the bands rather than being interviews with them, but are informative nonetheless. Featured in this issue were Cat Rapes Dog, Data Bank A, Vomito Negro, A Split Second, Some More Crime, The Overlords, Digital Poodle, Placebo Effect, and Clock DVA. No reviews really, but Richard assures me they'll be added as the zine grows. Cybernetik Renaissance editor: Virus 1376 Pearl St. #104 last issue rec'd: #3, 01 Aug 92 Denver, CO 80203 cover price: $2.00 size: HS-36 >> Clean and sparse leaning more towards the obscure side of things. This issue had interviews with Illusion of Safety and someone from the We Never Sleep label. The items reviewed made me think this issue was a year older than the cover date but I can understand getting behind. Reviewed items ranged from home produced tapes on up, but note that they require a review submission sheet so you should write to get a copy before sending anything. Cybernoise editor: Graham Needham 75 Lavernock Rd. last issue rec'd: 1, Oct 92 Penarth, S. Glam. CF6 2NY price: 2.50 Pounds UK size: S-16 >> Cybernoise is a collector's dream. Detailed discographies and news bits on a wide range of electronic bands/musicians. Issue 0 scoped Skinny Puppy and Nitzer Ebb. Issue 1 takes in Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Erasure, and Die Warzau. Dyadique Infos editor: 113. Rue Pelleport last issue rec'd: 7, Nov 92 33 800 Bordeaux price: ? FRANCE size: HS-20 >> French language networking tool for the electronic underground. Short features (I think) on tape labels (Organic, SPH, Tonspur Tapes), magazines (The Empty Quarter, Electric Shock Treatment), a few pages of reviews and a piece on Vomito Negro. Also contains ordering info for all Dyadique releases. Dysmetria editor: Dathan Kazslik 1262 Mulberry Ave last issue rec'd: 2, Sep 92 Atwater, CA 95301 price: $3.50 size: S-32 >> While the over-all look and slant of this full-sized zine is gothic, the interviews with Pressurehed, The Final Cut, and Batz Without Flesh show that maybe there is hope for the legions of the dead. Of course, there are inter- views with Shadow Project, Sex Gang Children, and Alien Sex Fiend and a piece on Aleister Crowley for your candlelight reading. Electric Shock Treatment editor: Brian Duguid 35 Fordington Ave. last issue rec'd: 2, 20 Feb 92 Winchester SO22 5AN price: $4 (cash) UK size: S-48 >> Very professional looking but not nearly as bland as that sounds. Lots of news on the UK area, along with a worldwide directory. The reviews are as far-ranging as Technology Works with a tendency towards experimental. Also reviews of zines, videos, and books. Latest issue had interviews with Asmus Tietchens, zoviet-france, and Factor X. Flipside editor: Al Flipside PO Box 60790 last issue rec'd: 81, Nov 92 Pasadena, CA 91116 price: $2.50 size: S-(around 150) >> Yep, tons of hardcore punk-rock is the usual but I've found something in each of the past five issues that usually more than compensates for the low cover price. A recurring column, Cooking With The Jolly Roger, is a must- read for all budding scientists. Past topics have dealt with building FM transmitters, how to pass a drug test, mixing chemicals for explosive results, etc, all in enough detail that I'm sure there are legions of kids missing hands and in jail because of what they read here. Al also will do an occasional interview with an "industrial" band that read better than most interviews in the zines devoted to the genre. For Crying Out Loud editor: Bob Silver PO Box 64875 last issue rec'd: #2, Oct 92 Los Angeles, CA 90064-0875 price: $6.00 size: S-98 >> Hefty zine includes interviews with All For One, Armageddon Dildos, Cheap Dialogue, Chem Lab, Digit, Din, Electronic Dream Factory, Havoc Music, The Overlords, Pankow, and Venus Walk! There are also pages of reviews, a lot of which I completely disagree with (which goes to show you what good a review is - they're just one person's opinion). If that weren't enough there is also a cassette featuring tracks from seven of the interviewed bands. Quite a good deal here and I hope they can maintain their pace without burning up. FIST editor: Dean 85 St. Agnes Place last issue rec'd: 4, 20 Jul 92 Kennington price: 2.50 pounds London SE11 4BB size: O-32 UK >> The size and style remind me a bit of the old (mid-80's) Interview magazine. Images and fiction tending to the harsh, with interviews including Tom Vague, Al Jourgensen, and Sol Invictus. No reviews of anything. Frantic editor: Carri Suksia Itsenaisyydenkatu 10 A 19 last issue rec'd: 2, Sep 92 33500 Tampere price: 15 fim (?) FINLAND size: S-32 >> The overall slant is towards electronic music of all forms with equal atten- tion paid to established and unsigned acts. The entire magazine is in Finnish but they thoughtfully provide a two page summary in English of each issue's articles. Many photos give this a more polished feel. Current issue features Laibach, A Split Second, Royal Family & The Poor, Two Witches, Cultivated Bimbo, and the Cure. Futureshock Incision editor: Mark Laliberte 2791 Jos St. Louis last issue rec'd: 6, Oct 92 Windsor, Ontario N8T 2M7 price: $1.75 (cash) CANADA size: HS-28 >> Focusing on the hard electronic realm but usually below the level of signed bands, FSI has come to showcase a lot of bands that will likely be familiar names in a year or two. Although the majority of interviews are conducted through the mail, Mark has definite knowledge of the bands' material and the questions avoid the generic "who/what/when." The reviews are well thought out and there's always some harsh art-work to fill in the gaps. Godsend editor: Todd Zachritz 1401 Fuquay Rd last issue rec'd: 18, Jun 92 Evansville, IN 47715 cover price: $3.00 size: S-38 >> Semiannual but worth waiting for. Interviews are sometimes choppy, usually conducted through the mail but there is good coverage of some relatively obscure bands. Usually very extensive discographies accompany the interviews. Tons of reviews of just about everything. GPC editor: Alex Kane PO Box 1515 last issue rec'd: #005, Jun 92 Allentown, PA 18105-1515 price: $4.00 size: HS-60 (with cassette) >> GPC began as a two-band compilation tape distributed with assorted flyers and propaganda. With release 5, Alex has taken the effort to sort through what he had and make a cohesive networking tool. The 60 page booklet that accompanies this release has sections for music, zines, radio and general contacts. There are also interviews with the featured bands (in this case Non-Aggresion Pact and Xorcist). Impulse editor: Mark Crumby 41 Quarrendon Rd last issue rec'd: 1, 09 Apr 92 Amersham, Bucks, HP7 9EF price: 4 pounds UK size: HS- >> (included 8 song cassette) Industrial Nation editor: Paul Valerio 114 1/2 E. College, #16 last issue rec'd: #6, Nov 92 Iowa City, IA 52240 cover price: $2.50 size: HS-108 >> "Since Chicago is generally considered the epicenter of industrial music in America" is a quote that leads off one of the reviews. If you're inclined to agree with that statement then you'll probably enjoy what goes on in here. Interviews with Shadow Project (ego piece for the writer), The Vampire Rodents ("How do you feel about being described as gothic or Industrial?"), Attrition ("What is your interpretation of Gothic?"..."And Industrial?"), The Final Cut ("Is there a big industrial scene in Detroit?"), Tool & Die ("Are you planning on moving to Chicago soon?"), Chris Connelly (you get the idea), Controlled Bleeding (the most informative and enjoyable of the lot). Lots of reviews (they don't like techno much) and other pieces but overall I sense a desire to be hip and on the edge of the next wave. Industrial Strength editor: Jordan Nogood PO Box 541 last issue rec'd: #2, 06 Sep 92 Dekalb, IL 60115 cover price: $2.50 size: HS-36 >> Probably the most design-intensive zine in this list. Lots of bells and whistles surround interviews with Consolidated, Meat Beat, KMFDM, and Steven Gilmore. A couple dozen reviews of mostly WaxTrax/Nettwerk stuff although two were of smaller releases so maybe they review tapes and just don't get many submissions. Iron Feather Journal editor: stev-e PO Box 1905 last issue rec'd: #12, Oct 92 Boulder, CO 80306 cover price: $2.00 size: HS-52 >> While this 'zine only deals marginally with music (in the form of a few reviews, a piece or two on raves, and some reprinted rave flyers) the remainder is great Stuff-You-Should-Not-Know material. Hacking cable TV, lists of BBS's, ANSI sequences, anonymous ftp sites, and a few good articles that keep in the same spirit. All interspliced with strange grafiks and a good dose of silliness. One of my current faves. IRRE-Tapes-Newsletter editor: Matthias Lang Baerendellstr. 35 last issue rec'd: 22, Dec 92 6795 Kindsbach cover price: ? (IRC/trades) Germany size: HS-8 >> Jammed with contacts for the home-taping scene. Written in German, covering the world. Machine Power editor: Heiki Sillaste 5 Admiral Rd last issue rec'd: 2, 17 Mar 92 Toronto, Ontario M5R 2L4 price: ? Canada size: HS- >> Half-sized 'zine that places equal value on style as on content (lots of words inside ovals, etc.) Interviews this issue with Phil Knight from Legendary Pink Dots, and members of 808 State. Filled out with some reviews, some radio show listings for the Toronto area, and an enigmatic comic. Music From The Empty Quarter editor: Deadhead PO Box 87, Ilford last issue rec'd: 6, Nov 92 Essex, IG1 3HJ price: 1.75 pounds ($4.00 at Tower Records) UK size: HS-(big) >> If you can't find this at Tower, hop a plane and go get a copy directly from them. The amount of info and effort put into this 'zine is amazing. The interviews are conducted by people who know the bands well, the reviews are fair and well thought. And the sheer amount of data in here will over- load the most diehard info junkie. Latest issue is printed and glued on the spine like a book. Interviews with Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto, The Hafler Trio, Bourbonese Qualk, among others. Nexus Six editor: Brian McNelis 2345 Erringer Rd, Suite 108 last issue rec'd: 2, Oct 92 Simi Valley, CA 93065 price: Free size: HS-8 >> Although this is produced in-house by the MetalBlade people (Malhavoc, Skrew) there are pointers to other goings-on in the cybertech underground. Reviews, artwork, news, and some contacts. Nocturnal Emissions editor: Diana Trinh PO Box 6516 last issue rec'd: Oxnard, CA 93031 price: $5.00 size: ? >> [from flyer at Helter Skelter - Nov 92] Science Fiction Eye editor: Stephen Brown PO Box 18539 last issue rec'd: 10, Jul 92 Asheville, NC 28814 price: $3.50 size: S-114 >> If you have any interest in current Science Fiction, this magazine is an absolute must. Interviews with the big and not-so-big, articles by the same on a variety of topics, many reviews, and usually some healthy warring going on in the letters section. Side-Line editor: Blanchart Benoit 16 rue de tarcienne last issue rec'd: #6, Aug 92 B-6280 GERPINNES price: 3.5 DM BELGIUM size: S-46 >> An English language zine from the heart of the electro-realm. The graphics and xeroxing are a bit raw but the interviews and reviews (26 pages!) read quite well. Interviewed in this issue are Clock DVA, And One, Cyborx, Pouppee Fabrikk, Noir Phesia, and No Comment. Sluzk & Fuzk editor: Per Aksel Lundgreen last issue St. Croixgt. 7 price: N-1604 FREDRIKSTAD size: NORWAY >> [have only seen flyer - not contacted] Sniper editor: Ivana Ford PO Box 563 last issue rec'd: #4, Nov 92 San Dimas, CA 91773 price: $? size: HS-8 >> They've not covered music for the past two issues. It's becoming a rant zine with the topics this time being the electoral college and hatred. Spontaneous Combustion editor: Mike 3943 Cumnor Rd last issue rec'd: 12, May 92 Downers Grove, IL 60515 price: $1.50 size: S-22 >> All over the place but seems to devote more attention to WaxTrax kind of stuff. Interviews with Psyche, Cat Rapes Dog, reviews of anything and everything, and some other weirdness. Mike also has an extensive collection of live show tapes and is looking for trades. Spun editor: Doug Chapel 147 Milk St. #8 last issue rec'd: 81, Dec 92 Westboro, MA 01581 price: $1.00 size: HS-32 >> Spun is fannish in that the articles tend to be personal feelings about the groups more often than interviews with them. They have a few pages devoted to music and zine reviews and usually include a couple of indie/ home-taped items in the reviews. Comes out VERY consistently and will review most anything that they come across. Suffer editor: Gianfranco Santoro Via Adage, 8 last issue rec'd: 1, 27 Mar 92 33010 Colugna price: ? Tavagnacco (Udine) Italy >> Small, but densely packed with reviews. Almost all text, all in Italian, but the reviews appear to cover everything from majors to independent cassette releases. Technology Works editor: Paul Moore PO Box 477 last issue rec'd: #11, Sep 92 Placentia, CA 92670-0477 price: $1.50 size: HS-36 >> People rave about it but I always see room for improvement. Densely packed and to the point. Lots of reviews, including pages of independent cassettes. Usually three major bands and one smaller band interviewed per issue. Issue 11 featured Numb, The Young Gods and Moby. Under The Volcano editor: Richard Black PO Box 236 last issue rec'd: #10, Oct 92 Nesconset, NY 11767 price: $1.00 size: S-24 >> Alternative paper from New York but usually has interviews/reviews of some bands in the scene. #10 has Babyland among others. Vaxzine editor: Morgan Geist OCMR last issue rec'd: Vol 2 #1, Aug 92 Box 701 price: $? Oberlin, OH 44074 size: S-8 >> Short and simple. The interviews with MC 900 Ft Jesus, Severed Heads and locals Fleshhouse nestle precariously amidst some pseudo-Dobbsian pieces. X Magazine editor: Jeff Hansen PO Box 1077 last issue rec'd: 8, fall 1991 Royal Oak, MI 48068-1077 price: $2.50 size: S- >> I've seen this zine go through many style changes, but the last issue was comic-mag sized and distributed mostly through comic stores although it does touch a lot on music. Features on The Orb and The KLF and some reviews (major label releases only). Very professional and worthwhile. Zone editor: Thomas Seiss Hahnengasse 5 last issue rec'd: 17, Oct 92 D-5110 Alsdorf price: 2.50 DM GERMANY size: HS-36 >> Exclusively written in German; very good layout with strong focus on the European scene but also covering the larger bands. Reviews are mostly of label stuff but they do cover some independent releases from all over. Interviews with Die Krupps, Vomito Negro, and Stereotaxic Device. The reviews are on top of all the releases - I didn't realize there was another slew of Frontline Assembly projects coming down the pipe (Will, Intermix, Noise Unit). Status Unknown: Agony (Finland), Bible Surprise Club (Colorado), Sprogg (Ohio) Defunct Zines: Aggro-tech (San Francisco), Ipso Facto (San Francisco). pdm@ucrmath.ucr.edu technology>>works ...ucsd!ucrmath!pdm
